Cornerstone has appointed Brenton Smith as Vice President for Asia Pacific and Japan, adding a new regional leader as it looks to expand its presence across APJ.

Smith will oversee strategy for Asia Pacific and Japan, including customer and partner relationships in key markets. His appointment bolsters Cornerstone's regional leadership team as competition for corporate spending on HR and workforce software remains intense.

He joins after seven years at BMC Software, where he led the business across APJ from Australia and Singapore and worked with customers across ASEAN and the wider region.

Smith brings experience in growing software businesses in Asia Pacific and leading regional teams. Cornerstone also highlighted his work with customers adopting large language models, AI agents and agentic AI in business settings.

The appointment comes as technology suppliers across the HR sector position themselves around artificial intelligence while trying to demonstrate practical uses for employers managing training, skills and workforce planning. In the region, local market knowledge remains important because buying patterns and regulatory settings vary widely between Japan, Southeast Asia and Australia.

Vincent Belliveau, Chief International Officer at Cornerstone, said the hire reflects that focus.

"Brenton Smith brings to Cornerstone a strong customer-first mindset and deep understanding of the challenges organizations are facing today," said Vincent Belliveau, Chief International Officer, Cornerstone. "Our customers are at the center of everything we do, and Brenton's deep understanding of the APJ market will help us strengthen those relationships and better support organizations as they navigate change and drive workforce transformation."

Cornerstone serves about 7,000 organisations and more than 140 million users across 186 countries, according to the company. That global footprint gives it a broad base in the market for software used in learning, talent and workforce management.

Regional push

Asia Pacific and Japan remain important markets for international software groups, combining large developed economies with faster-growing ones. Companies selling HR systems in the region often rely on local leadership to balance expansion plans with long sales cycles, channel partnerships and country-specific customer demands.

For Cornerstone, the hire also signals an effort to build closer ties with customers as they assess how AI tools fit into employee development and organisational planning. Many employers are still weighing how to introduce these systems in ways that support staff while meeting internal governance requirements.

Smith addressed that approach in his first comments after the appointment.

"What really stands out to me about Cornerstone is the focus on keeping people at the center of everything," said Brenton Smith, Vice President, Asia Pacific & Japan, Cornerstone. "AI is there to support how employees work, learn, and grow, and that creates a real opportunity to help organizations develop their people through continuous learning in a way that's practical and impactful. I'm looking forward to working with customers across Asia Pacific and Japan to help them adopt and scale technology in a way that supports their teams and drives real business outcomes."

Cornerstone positions its products around workforce readiness, combining workforce and labour market data with tools for learning, skills development and talent identification. Its platform is used to help organisations target training, identify skills gaps and find internal talent.

Smith's arrival gives the group an executive with experience in both established enterprise software sales and the newer wave of AI-related customer demand. In Asia Pacific and Japan, that combination is becoming more relevant as companies move beyond pilot projects and look for measurable use cases tied to staff development and operational needs.

Before joining Cornerstone, Smith worked across multiple markets in the region and supported customers navigating complex software deployments. His experience in Australia, Singapore and the wider APJ market is likely to be central to Cornerstone's effort to deepen its reach with regional customers and partners.
