OpenAI unveils ChatGPT shopping research with tailored guides
OpenAI has launched a new shopping research feature within its ChatGPT platform, designed to assist users in making more informed purchasing decisions. The tool aims to streamline the process of product discovery and comparison by providing tailored buyer's guides based on detailed user input.
Personalised recommendations
The shopping research experience enables users to describe their needs using natural language. ChatGPT then responds with clarifying questions, seeking to understand individual preferences such as budget, intended recipient, and specific features. Information from previous chats and ChatGPT memory is also used to refine recommendations, if enabled by the user.
The feature supports a wide range of queries, from finding electronics and household items to choosing gifts suited for particular interests. Users can receive a personalised guide that outlines top product options, highlights key differences, and presents up-to-date information sourced from multiple retailers.
Interactive experience
The new feature includes a visual interface where customers interact with suggested products during the process. Users can provide feedback on preferences, veto certain items, or request additional alternatives. This input helps the model adapt its recommendations in real time, adjusting its research based on changing requirements.
Shopping research is accessible via the mobile and web versions of ChatGPT for those on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro subscription levels. Usage limits have been relaxed for all users during the holiday period.
Information sourcing
The technology draws on a purpose-trained version of OpenAI's GPT-5 mini model. This version is designed to read product pages from well-regarded retailers, cite reliable sources, and synthesise data from across the web. It also claims to disregard low-quality or spam websites in order to maintain the integrity of its recommendations.
OpenAI states that shopping research is particularly well-suited for product categories that require detailed evaluation, such as electronics, beauty, home and garden, kitchen appliances, and sports equipment. For simpler queries, such as price checks, users may still receive standard ChatGPT responses.
Transparency and privacy
The company says the tool prioritises transparency, with results based exclusively on public information. According to OpenAI, user shopping chats are not shared with retailers, and search outcomes are generated organically without paid placements. Merchants may request inclusion through an allowlisting process, but there are no guarantees of placement or prominence in results.
OpenAI acknowledges possible limitations, such as errors in product detail accuracy or price information. Shoppers are encouraged to verify crucial details-including pricing and stock-on the merchant's own site before making a final purchasing decision.
Future developments
The shopping research capability includes plans to offer direct purchasing through ChatGPT via participating merchants using an Instant Checkout feature, which is expected to appear in future updates. For now, users may click through to external retailer sites to complete purchases.
"Our goal is to help simplify finding the right products. ChatGPT will continue to get better at understanding your preferences, covering more categories and offering more intuitive ways to compare and discover products," said OpenAI.
