Microlise has appointed Patrick Viney Regional Sales Director for Asia-Pacific, adding to its sales leadership in Australia and New Zealand.

Viney joins the transport technology provider with more than 30 years of sales and leadership experience across technology, telecommunications, retail, supply chain and logistics in Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

He has held senior roles at Telstra Enterprise, NTT Australia and JDA Software, now Blue Yonder. He also worked on the customer side at Woolworths, giving him experience from both supplier and end-user perspectives.

In the role, Viney will lead regional sales strategy and work with customers on operational issues affecting fleet and logistics businesses. He will also work with product and leadership teams as customer requirements and market conditions shape product development.

His initial focus will be on strengthening Microlise's position in grocery, retail and fast-moving consumer goods, while pursuing opportunities in wholesale, chilled logistics and other large-fleet markets.

The appointment comes as transport and logistics operators in Australia face pressure to improve fleet safety, meet compliance requirements and lift efficiency. Those conditions have increased demand for systems that help operators monitor vehicles, drivers and deliveries more closely.

Regional push

Microlise is seeking broader growth across Australia and New Zealand. The appointment forms part of a wider investment in regional leadership, sales and marketing. With an established customer base in the region, the company is looking to deepen those relationships while building a larger sales pipeline.

That strategy reflects changing demands on fleet operators, particularly in sectors handling high delivery volumes, temperature-sensitive goods and strict service requirements. Grocery, retail and FMCG fleets face continued scrutiny over service levels, cost control and safety standards, while chilled logistics operators must also manage product integrity and compliance.

Wholesale and adjacent logistics markets offer another area of expansion for transport software suppliers as operators look for systems that can link route planning, fleet oversight and proof of delivery. Large-fleet operators are also under pressure to show measurable gains from technology spending, especially as fuel, labour and maintenance costs remain under close watch.

Industry background

The Australian transport sector is operating in a more demanding environment, with tighter oversight of driver safety, fatigue management and vehicle use. At the same time, customers are asking operators for better visibility over deliveries and more reliable reporting.

For software suppliers, that has shifted sales conversations away from broad digitisation goals and towards specific operational outcomes. Vendors are increasingly expected to show how their products address day-to-day transport issues, including safety management, compliance processes and route execution.

Viney's background suggests Microlise is seeking a senior executive with experience across both enterprise sales and complex customer environments. His time at telecommunications and software companies would have involved large-account management and technology-led sales, while his experience at Woolworths would have exposed him to the operational priorities of a major retailer with substantial logistics demands.

That mix may prove useful as transport technology providers seek longer-term contracts with customers whose operations often span multiple business units, fleet types and compliance frameworks. It also comes at a time when large operators want suppliers that understand both commercial and operational pressures.

Microlise said Viney would help build repeatable sales approaches centred on safety, compliance and efficiency improvements, and work with both new and existing customers across the region.

Explaining his decision to join, Viney said: "Microlise has a strong foundation in APAC, established customer relationships and significant potential to grow. What attracted me was the opportunity to contribute to a business focused on making transport safer and more sustainable. Safer transport is not a cost, it's fundamental to running a better business. I'm looking forward to working with our customers and the wider team to understand their operational priorities, demonstrate the value our technology can deliver and build long-term partnerships. Sustainable growth comes from solving real customer challenges and creating value, rather than simply pursuing transactions."
