From data to delivery: How digital connectivity can change the way india moves goods

A truck carrying goods does not travel alone.

Behind every shipment is a flow of information about where the goods are, where they are going, who is responsible for them, what documentation is required and when they are expected to arrive.

Yet, traditionally, the physical movement of goods and the movement of information have not always progressed at the same speed.

The shift in logistics in India has begun to bridge that gap. 

Specifically, the investment in highways, ports, railways, freight corridors and warehouses has improved the physical infrastructure of trade in the country. The next issue would be to ensure connectivity of information about these components.

Logistics is becoming a data challenge

Consider a manufacturer sending goods to another state.

The shipment may involve a transporter, a warehouse, a highway, a toll system, a rail network, a port or another logistics node. Different agencies and systems may hold information about different parts of the journey.

In the event that such systems do not communicate well enough, businesses may have an unclear understanding of their supply chain. For this reason, digital integration is becoming integral to logistics policies. Take, for example, the Unified Logistics Interface Platform, which not only provides API-based data exchange but has also grown into a digital ecosystem.

As of today, ULIP has signed MoUs with 11 States and 2 Union Territories, and currently connects 13 Ministries, 48 Systems, 2,000+ Data Fields and 142 APIs, with 2,391 companies registered and 298 applications developed.

The real importance of such a platform, however, cannot be measured only by the number of APIs or transactions.

Its larger significance lies in the possibility of connecting information that was previously fragmented.

The state is becoming an important part of the digital logistics story

Logistics is a national activity, but supply chains operate locally and regionally.

A state government understands its industrial clusters, roads, warehouses, local transport networks and business ecosystem better than any national database can.

That is why state-level integration is important.

Why this matters to businesses

For businesses, especially MSMEs, logistics is not simply about transportation.

It affects inventory, working capital, delivery commitments and customer relationships.

A business may be able to manufacture a product efficiently, but if it cannot predict how that product will move through the supply chain, its competitiveness can still be affected.

Better visibility can help businesses plan.

It can potentially help a transporter understand the movement of cargo, enable a manufacturer to plan inventory and allow policymakers to identify recurring bottlenecks.

The objective is not to eliminate human decision-making. It is to give decision-makers better information.

The vernacular economy needs digital logistics too

There is another dimension to this transformation that deserves attention.

India's economic growth is increasingly distributed beyond its largest metropolitan centres.

Manufacturing units, MSMEs, food-processing businesses, traders and exporters in smaller cities and towns are becoming part of national and global supply chains.

For these businesses, access to reliable logistics information can be particularly valuable.

Digital infrastructure can potentially reduce some of the information disadvantages faced by smaller businesses, provided that platforms are designed with usability and accessibility in mind.

This is where the state-level approach becomes important.

A logistics platform must ultimately serve the businesses that actually use the roads, warehouses, freight networks and ports.

Technology cannot replace infrastructure

There is a tendency to describe digitalisation as a solution to every logistics problem.

That would be a mistake.

Digital technology cannot substitute for adequate road capacity, efficient ports, good warehousing, reliable rail connectivity or effective last-mile transportation.

What it can do is help these physical systems operate with better information.

The strongest logistics ecosystem will therefore be one where physical and digital infrastructure complement each other.

From fragmented information to connected decision-making

India's logistics journey is gradually moving towards this model.

The Logistics Data Bank provides visibility into EXIM container movement. ULIP connects government systems and enables data exchange. State-level initiatives are now exploring how these capabilities can be applied to specific regional logistics challenges.

The next question is how effectively these systems can be adopted.

Technology succeeds when it becomes invisible to the user when a business does not have to think about which database contains the information it needs, but can simply access the information required to make a decision.

That should be the larger ambition for India's digital logistics ecosystem.

The country has spent decades building the physical network through which goods move.

The next decade could be about building the digital network through which information moves.

And when those two networks work together, India's logistics sector could become not merely faster, but more predictable, transparent and responsive.
