18 year 'wild ride' for TechDay to global tech news powerhouse

Eighteen years ago, we launched our first magazine; The Channel. Little did we know that our modest magazine would evolve into our current network of 37 tech news sites globally.

Below is one of our classic magazine covers from yesteryear:

Over these 18 years, we have had our highlights and our lowlights. Our most significant hurdle was the dotcom crash in 2010, which we only just survived.

Some key milestones along the way:

  • 2006 - Our first magazine launch: The Channel
  • 2007 - Acquired Telecommunications Review magazine, plus The Line and M-Net news sites
  • 2008 - Acquired NetGuide magazine
  • Late 2008 - Acquired IT Brief magazine
  • 2012 - We acquired Start-Up magazine
  • 2013 - Our main competitor IDG closed its New Zealand titles
  • 2014 - We launched in Australia
  • 2015 - We became digital-only publisher
  • Late 2015 - We launched in Singapore with DataCenter News.
  • 2017 - NetGuide became FutureFive to represent the five key consumer electronics trends: digital entertainment, smart homes, drones, smartphones, and virtual reality
  • 2019 - Launched CFOtech sites across APAC
  • 2020 - Launched RemoteTechWorker and the IT Reboot during COVID-19
  • 2021 - Launched our eCommerceNews sites across the APAC region
  • 2022 - Launched CMOtech Asia site
  • Late 2022 - Launched into the UK with eight sites
  • 2023 - We launched into India with eight sites
  • 2024 - We relaunched FutureFive Australia
  • Mid-2024 - We hired our first specialist Interview Editor, Melania Watson.

In a recent survey of communications contacts & customers, TechDay scored its highest editorial quality rating ever. A whopping 48% of respondents believe that TechDay's editorial quality is higher than our competitors.

"In 2022, only 15% of the survey respondents thought we had higher editorial quality than our competitors, today in that this is 48%. In fact, 93% of respondents believe TechDay's Editorial quality is higher or on par with our competitors," TechDay Publisher, Sean Mitchell, said.

In its 19th year, TechDay has grown to a whopping 37 sites, including in Asia, Australia, the UK, India and New Zealand - and we're not stopping there. Mitchell has plans to establish another 16 sites in North America by the end of the year.

"This follows the successful launches in India this year and in the UK last year. In less than 18 months, the UK has become our second biggest market," he said.

However, Mitchell admits it's taken a lot of effort from the team to get to this point.

"We have had a wild ride, with nearly losing everything in 2010 during the financial crisis, through to our recent run of record years," he stressed.

TechDay's focus on expansion is set to further elevate our reputation and presense in the technology news space.

"Our success and expansion has boiled down to incredible partners, awesome employees and relentless innovation. Our best times remain ahead of us."
